When I think of the window covering called Roman Shade, I typically think of a flat shade made out of a burlap material that I saw in Northern Minnesota log cabins.  I remember them because of their uniqueness. They stacked onto themselves when raised by a cord that was then wrapped around a cord clete anchored to the side of the window.

After doing research for this article, I now know I should think of ancient Rome, because this window treatment was created during the time when Romans were very busy building their colosseums.  Their procedures created a ton of dust so Roman households would put flat – wet – cloth in their windows to keep the dust from entering the space.

And, needless to say, the innovative Hunter Douglas designers have used the original Roman concept of a fabric shade to cover a window and created one of the most spectacular window treatments in the industry.
